There has never been so many free goodies available to the innovative teacher as now. Hot Potatoes (click on link to download) has become free software since 1 September 2009. The fact that it is free does not make it any less valuable! I think that is where many people don't quite get it. They equate the cost of software with its value. That is just not true.
Hot Potatoes
is top notch software that you as the educator may use to create
quizzes for your learners in html format. Don't let all this talk of
html, scare you. An html document is simply a document that a browser
such as Firefox or Internet Explorer can open. You can create these
quizzes and anyone with a computer that has a browser installed - and
most computers have browsers - will be able to use them. They do not
need propriety software. They also don't need to have Hot Potatoes
installed. You can copy these quizzes into a folder and when you double
click on any of them it opens in the default browser and away you go!
Hot Potatoes is in fact a user friendly suite of 6 programs that you
can use to create interactive multiple choice quizzes, cross-word
puzzles, fill-the-gap type questions, matching and short answer
questions. Students love these - especially the feedback that you can
build into it. There is also a Potato "Masher" that you can use to link
these quizzes into a chain.
Of course, if you want the full
benefit of quizzes like Hot Potatoes you need to use them in a Learning
Management System such as Moodle, which is also free! That is a story
for another day. (You can visit the forum for a post on Moodle.)
